Motorsport fans may have caught Gareth’s moment of glory when he kept pace with fellow Speed Sunday presenters Jason Plato and Vikki Butler Henderson in the Racing for Charity kart event at Thruxton in late 2004.
Well, now the Welshman’s been at it again as he once more joined an ITV1 motorsports presenting team to drive in the Johnny Herbert Kart Challenge at The Raceway in Kings Cross.
Sadly, Gareth failed to repeat his foolhardy (but surprisingly effective) Thruxton tactic of overtaking on the grass, but he was nevertheless chuffed to receive another kind of satisfaction when the F1 driver Johnny Herbert himself handed him a very personal award.
“Johnny presented me with a certificate for helping to raise over £250,000 for National Kidney Research, with my involvement in his karting challenge over the past decade” beamed the presenter, “I can honestly say I haven’t felt so proud of a piece of paper since I got my gold swimming certificate when I was 10!”
As well as Gareth and his fellow ITV presenters Louise Goodman and Ted Kravitz, motorsport luminaries present at the event included F1 driver Jenson Button and 2003 Le Mans winner Guy Smith.
